How to Make Fall Family Photos Feel Like Fall in Florida | Pensacola, FL

If you live somewhere in the South like Pensacola, Florida, you know the struggle.

September rolls around and suddenly Pinterest is full of golden leaves, cozy sweaters, pumpkins, boots, and crisp little autumn mornings.

Meanwhile, we're over here checking the weather and realizing it's still 89 degrees outside. 😂

Our trees are green. Our kids are sweating. And that chunky knit sweater you saved for family photos? Probably isn't happening.

But here's the thing:

You don't need changing leaves to have beautiful fall photos.

You just need to stop thinking that fall has to look a certain way.

Instead of trying to recreate someone else's fall, let's create one that feels like yours.

Fall Is a Feeling, Not Just a Color on a Tree

When you think about fall, what do you actually love about it?

Maybe it's the warm colors.

Maybe it's the cozy textures.

Maybe it's the golden light.

Maybe it's slowing down a little.

Maybe it's gathering your family together.

Maybe it's that feeling of the holidays coming and everyone being just a little more intentional about being together.

None of those things require a tree covered in orange leaves.

And honestly, that's one of my favorite things about photographing fall in Florida.

We get to do it a little differently.

1. Let Your Outfits Create the Fall Feeling

Your family doesn't have to be dressed head-to-toe in brown and rust to look like fall.

In fact, please don't put everyone in the exact same color.

Instead, choose a color palette that feels warm and seasonal and let everyone have a little personality within it.

Think:

Rust + cream + olive

Camel + ivory + chocolate

Burgundy + denim + tan

Terracotta + soft blue + cream

Mustard + brown + ivory

And don't forget about texture.

Linen, corduroy, velvet, denim, gauze, knits, suede and soft layers can all add that cozy fall feeling without requiring anyone to wear a sweater in Florida.

And if you're staring at your closet thinking, "Okay, but where am I supposed to find all of this?"

That's where I come in.

I love helping my clients figure out what everyone should wear, and my client closet is available to my families too. I can help you choose a dress for Mom and then build everyone else's outfits around it.

I also keep a list of some of my favorite Amazon finds for families who want something easy to order and coordinate.

You don't have to figure it all out by yourself.

2. Find Fall in the Light

One of the easiest ways to make an image feel like fall has absolutely nothing to do with what is growing behind you.

It's the light.

Warm, glowy light can make even a very green Florida landscape feel completely different.

This is one reason I love the softer light later in the day. The sun gets lower, the light gets warmer, and everything starts to feel a little more golden.

And sometimes, instead of looking for the perfect "fall" backdrop, I'm looking for the perfect little pocket of light.

That's where the magic happens.

3. Stop Looking for a "Fall Location"

This might be my biggest piece of advice.

You don't have to find a place covered in leaves.

A field can feel like fall.

A wooded path can feel like fall.

A quiet little corner of Pensacola can feel like fall.

And yes...

The beach can feel like fall, too.

You can change the entire feeling of a session with your clothing, the time of day, the way we use the light and the way I photograph your family.

Sometimes the location is just the backdrop.

The story is your family.

4. Let Your Kids Be Kids

I don't want your fall photos to look like everyone stood perfectly still in front of a pile of pumpkins.

I want to see your kids.

The way your little boy grabs Dad's hand.

The way your daughter spins around in her dress.

The baby who won't stop grabbing Mom's necklace.

The sibling who makes everyone laugh.

The curls, the missing teeth, the bandaids, the dirty feet.

Those are the things you're going to miss.

And honestly, those moments are what make a photograph feel timeless to me.

So if your toddler isn't interested in looking at my camera?

That's okay.

We'll play.

We'll walk.

We'll run.

We'll snuggle.

We'll slow down.

And somewhere in all of that, I'll make photographs of the people you love exactly as they are right now.

5. You Don't Have to Recreate Someone Else's Fall

I think this is the hardest part sometimes.

We see beautiful photographs online and think our family needs to look like that.

We save the Pinterest board.

We find the outfits.

We search for the location.

And then we look around Pensacola and think...

"Well, we don't have that here."

But maybe that's the point.

Your fall doesn't have to look like someone else's.

Maybe your fall is barefoot kids running through a field.

Maybe it's golden light on the beach.

Maybe it's a little girl in a rust-colored dress with the Gulf behind her.

Maybe it's your family walking down a quiet road together.

Maybe it's still 80 degrees and everyone is wearing sandals.

That's okay.

You don't have to recreate someone else's fall.

You can make your own.

So, How Do You Make Fall Photos When You Live Somewhere Without "Fall"?

You use what you do have.

Warm colors.

Beautiful textures.

Golden light.

Interesting locations.

Movement.

Connection.

And most importantly...

Your people.

Because when I look back at photographs years from now, I don't think I'm going to care whether the leaves were the perfect shade of orange.

I'm going to care about who was in the picture.

I'm going to care about how little they were.

I'm going to care about that smile.

That tiny hand.

That laugh.

That season of life that went by way too quickly.

That's what I want your fall photos to give you.

Not a perfect recreation of someone else's Pinterest board.

A beautiful reminder of your family, right now.
